Quasi People Subjects Louis L. Brossard 30 July 2013 Suppose we develop Quasi People Subjects, QPS, human like beings. These “persons” would be test tube babies and have no identifiable human parents. They would be generated from random donated eggs and sperm and then cloned. The purpose of these QPS people would be to replace the use of animals in scientific testing, especially medical testing. By using QPS subjects the development of drugs and medical treatments could be greatly accelerated. Human suffering and discomfort would be reduced. There would be no inter-species false results. By cloning certain groups so all specimens would be identical genetically the size of the experimental group would be greatly reduced and the results greatly improved. Many more citizens would be saved by finding cures years faster. This improvement would mean more profit for Pharma who would fund the total endeavor. The animal lover groups would rejoice in saving so many animals from medical research. The majority of subjects would be genetically modified to feel no pain. Many could be kept isolated to minimize awareness of their experimental purpose. Their education would be reduced to a minimum also, depending on their proposed use. The whole endeavor would be under extreme security. Only very few would know what was being done and they would be kept in isolation from the general population. The penalty for leaking information about the project would be extra judicial elimination. Security would be even greater than for Alamo, New Mexico during WWII and the officially condoned torture at Abu Ghraib. The ethical considerations would be answered by the Utilitarian principle of the greatest good for the greatest number argument, just as it is today with the use of lethal force by our government. Our culture has little moral concern or constraint in using remote killing of many innocent foreigners by claiming one “bad” person was eliminated. The drone program has increased greatly in the last few years. With proper funding of a ubiquitous propaganda program the logic of such reasoning would be accepted by the most citizens. If ever there were a leak and the public was made aware of the program a litany of prepared spectacular successes and cures would have been prepared for wide spread dissemination. Such justification would soon quiet any wide spread opposition. Our culture would soon accept the use of QPS intended for humanitarian life improvement. We have accepted the growing of many animals for human consumption even when that consumption is often detrimental to human life. Many animals grown for food live a life of misery and monotony. Relieving such abuse would lift a great burden from the conscience of humanity. For those few who would still find using QPSs ethically unacceptably a program of voluntary substitution could be instigated where they could give a reprieve of a QPS by taking its place. There would be no reporting of such substitution to dissuade the glory seekers from copying their example. With the ever increasing world population due to the increased life spans from the improved world health there would be a concomitant program to ease and accelerate the inevitable ending of useless years at the end of life. A per-determined population would be maintained for mankind. Our dear pets would no longer be maimed by experimentation and neutering and our obligation to insure their comfort and longevity confirmed.

Lou: You cannot argue that the end in this case (which is at best only "hopeful") justifies the means which are clearly inhumane. Mao & Stalin come to mind. Even if the end were certain, you'd still have a serious ethical problem.

I was afraid that there would be some who missed the intended parody of my post. No, I do not believe we should create QPS. I think that would be abominable. I do think we should experiment on animals but only under strict rules and with rigorous oversight from peer scientists. The good that has been done from animal experimentation is enormous and the results essential to human well being. That was the conclusion I was hoping for.
