It is disheartening to hear how some of us are trying to pass the responsibility for our incompetence and ignorance to the nation we invaded. We no longer even know how to define what a successful end to the war would be. We are now pleading with other nations to come to our aid and help us retreat with some semblance of order and dignity.
It was painful for me to watch President Bush, the father, unable to complete a speech praising his intelligent and competent son, Governor Ged Bush. He just broke down and cried uncontrollably. He understands that the name Bush has lost all respectability and honor because his simple son, the venal, sallow, dogmatic one followed him to national prominence instead of his intellectual son. His legacy now will be the father of the worst president this nation has had instead of the honorable one he earned for himself.

This country still offers more opportunity to achieve financial advantage than most other countries. We still have a country with admirable personal freedom. We can still regain an honorable place in the world. What we need to do is live up to the values we teach our children. Is it hopelessly naive to believe that our government should tell the truth and that they should put the country’s interests before their own? I learned we are a country of laws. I think we should be. I learned that we are a country that guarantees personal freedom and the equality of all people before the law. Let us return to those principals.
It is now essential that we, the people, demand of our government rational action rather then slogans; a realistic assessment of our power and our place in the community of governments and respect for international law. It is time we demand of our government that it live up to our American values.
